Eleon
I designed an instruction booklet for Eleon, a small indie cosmetics brand that focuses on the transformative power of makeup.
The brand targets makeup artists, cosplayers, drag enthusiasts, and transgender people who are seeking creative makeup techniques.
The booklet, intended to accompany the brand’s contour palettes, features illustrated face charts that demonstrate different ways to apply the product to look more masculine or feminine.
Research was conducted in these key areas: 1) makeup contour techniques, 2) stylistic depictions of makeup face charts, 3) makeup brands positioned similarly to Eleon, and 4) methods for information booklet design.
Evolution of a face chart. The mask-like appearance was key to keeping the illustrations simple, gender-neutral, and inclusive to different facial features.
Initial color/texture inspiration plus my own experimentation. The images on the right were made by combining photographs of holographic sheets and paste papers, resulting in a vibrant, yet not overtly feminine texture.
Instead of using skin colors, the final face charts are coded with bright tones that represent shades lighter or darker than the reader’s skin.
